Dr. Trevor Cosmetic and Family Dentistry
When a patient is missing teeth, they can experience many different complications, such as deterioration of the bone and gum tissue. If the number of missing teeth is too high to fix with bridges and/or crowns, implants may be the best option. Dental implants are surgically placed prosthetic devices anchored into the jawbone to support a crown, bridge, or denture through osseointegration—a process in which bone fuses around the implant fixture Dr. Trevor Tsuchikawa of Dr. Trevor Cosmetic and Family Dentistry offers implants to patients with missing or damaged teeth. Implants Q & A
What are Implants?
Dental implants are surgically placed prosthetic devices anchored into the jawbone (often made of titanium or zirconia) to support a crown, bridge, or denture through osseointegration—a process in which bone fuses around the implant fixture.
What Types of Implants are Available?
- Single-tooth implants for replacing individual missing teeth
- Implant-supported bridges or overdentures for multiple or full‑arch restorations
- Overdentures securely attach to implants while remaining removable by the patient, offering improved stability compared to traditional dentures
- All-on-4® technique (fixed full-arch prosthetics anchored on as few as four implants), ideal for patients requiring complete dental arch restoration
How are Implants Created?
Dental implants are small, screw-shaped posts made from strong, biocompatible materials like titanium. They’re placed into the jawbone during a short surgical procedure, where they fuse naturally with the bone over a few months. Once healed, a custom-made crown that looks and feels like a real tooth is attached to the implant. The result is a permanent, stable replacement that restores both function and appearance.
Why Should Patients Choose Implants?
Implants aren’t the right choice for every patient, but they do offer several benefits. Some of these benefits include:
- Superior Stability & Comfort – Unlike removable dentures, implants are fixed in place and feel more like natural teeth
- Longevity & Durability – Implant success rates reach 93–98% over 5–10 years; many last 10–15+ years with proper care
- Bone & Facial Preservation – Placing implants stimulates bone, preventing jaw resorption and maintaining facial structure
- Improved Function & Hygiene – Better chewing ability, clearer speech, and easier oral hygiene similar to natural teeth
Are Other Options Available?
Alternatives to implants may be available, depending on how many teeth you’re missing and your treatment goals. For example, if you’re only missing a few teeth and they’re next to each other, you may opt for a dental bridge instead. However, you’ll only be able to have a bridge if you have teeth on either side of the gap capable of receiving a crown.
Before you begin any type of treatment, Dr. Trevor will take the time to discuss all of your options with you in detail so you can make the best choice.
